Personalize Your Wedding: Escort Cards & Place Cards (And The Difference Between The Two!)

This week in the personalize your wedding series we are talking about escort cards and place cards. Before we get into how you can personalize these, let’s go over the difference between the two. Are you thinking “wait, there is a difference?” you are definitely in the majority. Most people don’t realize they are separate things and serve different purposes. There are a few reasons you should have both, and also reasons where you don’t need one of them.

Place cards are for the table setting. These are generally found on or around the seat where the guest should be sitting. Place cards are a way to indicate the meal a person should receive, and/or where they should be sitting.

Escort cards are most often found all together on an escort table or in an escort area. They are used to guide each guest to their table.

A few occasions when you should have both:

- If you have a large guest count it’s nice to make sure couples will be sitting directly next to each other. Sometimes a few people will sit down at a table and not pay attention to the single chairs on either side. This can be avoided by having both types of cards.

- Plated meal with more than one meal option. Did you have guests select which meal they would like to have? This is when that will come into play. Place cards will help the servers know who ordered which specific meal.

When is it okay to just have one? Which one should you have?

I always recommend having escort cards. Even with a small number of guests it helps the reception stay organized and be ready quickly. When there isn’t a seating chart you may end up with chairs moved around, some guests not comfortable with where they need to sit, or even running out of space. By creating a seating chart beforehand and then creating escort cards you are saving yourself, your vendors and your guests the trouble of doing the guess work.

Now lets get to the fun part…how to show off your personality with either option.

Escort cards and seating cards can really add to your wedding day theme and be a reflection of your personality. Pinterest has endless ideas, (check out our escort & place card board here!) but try thinking outside of the box a little bit.

Is there something small that has been a symbol of your relationship?

Did you meet in Georgia? What about having a calligrapher write on peaches? We once used oranges with calligraphy and it was adorable!

Do the both of you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee? A mini jar with coffee grounds and a calligraphy tag with a table number is a sweet idea.

For the nautical hearts like ours, we love including beachy details. Beach glass place cards, or oyster shell escort cards. There are so many options when it comes to nautical themes.

Some other fun ideas are candles with personalized labels for a romantic wedding, a small herb with a wooden stick as the table number for a couple that loves to garden together, or even back to simple and have a calligrapher write your escort cards in colors to match your wedding.

Did you know the difference between escort and place cards? Which of these ideas is your favorite?

Watercolor Bliss Styled Shoot

You know how they say rain on your wedding day is good luck? Well, we think rain on your styled shoot day is as well! This shoot was planned for late May, and we thought we would be passed the April showers, but we were wrong. It started pouring down rain at 2pm, the exact time the shoot was set to begin and it rained  until 20 minutes before sunset. We didn't let that stop us!

The thing about rain, wind, snow, etc. is that you have to work around it. You need to go with the flow, shift things as needed, and still make magic happen. Instead of everything being outside, we moved the reception under an awning, styled the cake in a beautiful bay window, and did some portraits in the entrance. We decided to venture out in the rain for some more portraits, and all of a sudden the rain stopped! If you could have seen all of us standing around with our Umbrellas, watching Anne work her magic, then realizing it had stopped raining. It was great!

Even with the rain, this shoot was amazing. I may be biased, but these are some of the best creatives in this industry. We all chatted like we have known each other forever. We worked together like we had done it countless times. We laughed until we cried over Chick-fil-A nuggets. We packed up our car that night feeling so full of joy and happiness for the friends we have in this wedding world, and for the memories that were made.

Thank you again to EVERY SINGLE ONE of you that helped to bring this vision to life. It was the best rainy day!

Spending A Day At Running Hare Vineyard

Don't you wish that you could jet off to Italy for a weekend to drink amazing wine, spend time walking through the vineyard, and listening to a good band? It sure would be nice to be surrounded by a beautiful villa, rolling hills and great friends while basking in the sun and glow of a wonderful day. What would you say if you heard that you didn't need to go all the way to Italy for a beautiful Italian getaway like the one described?

If you have ever spent any amount of time at Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick, you know exactly what I am talking about. The long driveway leading you to the winery may be a bit daunting at first, but then you reach the top of the hill, see fields of grapes waiting to be made into wine, and a beautiful villa atop the hill in front of you. The entire property is something to see.

We were thankful to spend a day at the Running Hare Vineyard a few weeks ago and even though it was a bit chilly, we couldn't help but stand in awe at what a beautiful location it is. Running Hare hosts countless events, has a winery, brewery and a outdoor stage for various musical talents that stop by every weekend. There is also an outdoor space for a wedding ceremony, and they host weddings inside the villa as well.

Since we were there for a relaxing day, we brought along some cheeses and snacks, grabbed a table and started our tasting. There are 8-10 various wines to sample, and then we typically purchase a bottle or two for the table (bonus-they almost always have a Groupon or Living Social deal!) which is perfect for a few hours.

Being able to relax in such a gorgeous setting like Running Hare Vineyard is the perfect way to spend a day.

Springfield Manor Wedding Venue in Frederick, Maryland

As a wedding planner and a creative immersed in this world of events, I have come to find that there are dreams we never thought we would have. Some of those dreams are realized when you see the perfect wedding venue. A few months ago we were on a tour in Frederick, Maryland and our next stop was Springfield Manor. I was excited because honestly, just the word "manor" intrigues me.

Well as we were driving down the highway, I caught my first glimpse. We're we really going to that gorgeous house on the hill? The one with the gorgeous mountains right behind it? Sure enough, our motor coach started up the driveway. My wedding planner heart was pounding, I was so excited to see this beautiful venue.

Walking up the steps I could just see how gorgeous this venue would be on a spring day as the flowers were blooming, or a fall day as the leaves were changing. There were so many places for photos of the bride and groom, or the bride with her gals. I loved it all. Then one of my favorite parts was the downstairs bar. What a perfect space for the groom to get ready with his guys!

As we walked to the second floor, again visions of weddings were dancing through my head. The house had a barn type feel, and giant windows to see the mountain views. I took a quick glance outside (it was 9 degrees that day, with a wind chill below 0) and it was beautiful. The perfect ceremony space with that backdrop of the mountains, this is one of those places were nature just takes over.
